The 39 Steps
by NYTP Staff

The 39 Steps, an espionage thriller and slapstick comedy is now running at Cort Theater at New York. The play is not appropriate for children aged below 8 years. The absurdly enjoyable hilarious whodunit is a theatrical adaptation of the 1935 film of Alfred Hitchcock, a masterpiece. In the story, Richard Hannay, a UK actor, is lured by a mysterious woman, a spy. After her death in his flat, Hannay flees to London and the police trail him. The other cast are Jennifer Ferrin, Cliff Saunders and Arnie Burton. Sam Robards has now taken over Richard Hannay's role. The show is enjoying an open ended run and a huge popularity amongst audience. The Roundabout Broadway production has won many awards like Drama Desk Award and Tony Awards for Best Sound Design and Best Lighting Design. The play exactly shares the characters and plot with the film made earlier. The thriller play was also a great hit in London and winner of Olivier Award for new comedy.
