by NYTP Staff

Few people who visit restaurants ever bother to find out about its history. Whenever you visit the Tavern on the Green, do not forget that the building housing this famous restaurant was built in 1870 and its designer was Jacob Wrey Mould. The then mayor, Fiorello LaGuardia who was satisfied with the sample breakfast sausage he took, launched Tavern on the Green on the 20th of October 1934. This restaurant is loved a lot by the New Yorkers and is an important part of the city's community.

In the early 70's this restaurant was closed down to restart later on, thanks to the efforts of Warner LeRoy who pumped in $10 million for renovating this restaurant. Tavern of the Green re opened on the 31st of August 1976 and instantly became a hit with the New Yorkers due to its decoration and diversified menu. One can regularly find celebrities visiting this restaurant and some of the most prestigious events are held in here including international film premieres.
