Van Cortlandt Park
by NYTP Staff

Van Cortlandt Park is the fourth largest park of New York city. With thousands of acres over the valleys and ridges of the northwest Bronx, the playgrounds and playing fields are scattered about the Van Cortlandt Park’s edges, bordering a forest heartland.  The park boasts of being the oldest in the Bronx, having the first public golf course of the country and the largest freshwater lake of borough. The park has a rich past in culture, well versed history and intrinsic natural beauty with quiet green oak forests and mantle of cricket players over the Parade Ground. In 1639, the first Europeans were brought by the Dutch East India Company to settle in Bronx. In 1646, Adriaen van Der Donck, a Dutchman, became the first owner of the Park. The parkland was acquired by the New York city in 1888. Since 1992, ‘Friends of Van Cortlandt Park’, a group of residents of Bronx are promoting, protecting and preserving the green space of the Van Cortlandt Park.
