Pelham Bay Park
by NYTP Staff

Pelham Bay Park in Bronx is the largest park in the New York and is three times bigger than Central Park, Manhattan. The land was earlier owned by Ann Hutchinson, Siwanoy Indians and Continental Army. The native Siwanoy Americans, who were the original inhabitants of this place area, were attracted by plenty of turtle, sturgeon and deer. In 1888, Bronx Parks Department purchased the 1700 acres property and changed the estates into a park. The natural woodland was converted into a recreational facility by Robert Moses, the Parks Commissioner, who developed the park with comfort stations, playground and other amenities. The Park also features a diverse and wide range of animal and plant life. The park offers miles of hiking trails and bridle paths, orchard beach, two golf courses, Bartow-Pell Mansion and a 13 mile saltwater shoreline hugging Long Island Sound. Its numerous courts and fields are frequently visited by with Athletes while its playgrounds are enjoyed by children.
