McCarren Park
by NYTP Staff

McCarren Park is equally cherished and valued in Williamsburg and Greenpoint. The park offers home for endless games of soccer, baseball, kickball, handball, boce, football, tennis, basketball and playground for running events. The sprawling McCarren park is busy with bustling activity and shared by neighborhood families, young renters and recent immigrants. The park was named after Patrick Henry McCarren, born to Irish immigrants’ family, in East Cambridge of Massachusetts. McCarren shifted to Williamsburgh, now a part of Brooklyn and rose in the ranks of Brooklyn Democratic Party. He won the 1881 elections to the state assembly and 1889 election to the State Senate. The Park was named in 1909, by Board of Alderman, in his memory. The Park was earlier known as Greenpoint Park. From 1903 to 1905, the New York City acquired the four parcels of the Park and immediately developed outdoor gymnastic apparatus and two playgrounds. In 1910s, the park was developed in to a community showplace.
