New York City
New York is a city of parades, festivals and special events. There is something or the other that is going on in the city during the weekends as well as on weekdays. There are a number of ethnic groups that are there in the city and all of them conduct their own events and festivals. Most of them go down Fifth Avenue. There are also a number of annual events that are held with much pomp and show such as dog shows, antique shows, food festivals and film festivals.
During the summers there are a number of special New York festivals & events that are conducted. There are free concerts of every kind that are held. Whatever you want to listen, from Mozart to rap you would find everything here. There is also free theatre that you can attend. Be it Shakespeare or performance arts you will have a mind boggling variety to choose from. These New York festivals & events are mostly held in parks all over the city. There is the JVC Jazz Festival that is held in the month of June and the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament that is conducted in the month of august.
You can catch the Metropolitan Opera performances and the New York Philharmonic while you are in the city. There are also modern dances and salsa that are performed. An enjoyable performance that you can see is the Shakespeare in the Park that is conducted at the Central Park. SummerStage is another festival that is held at the Central Park. There is an excellent line up of dance, movies and free music that are performed at this festival.
In the winter or early spring the city plays host to Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus for two months. Prior to beginning the show the animals of the circus are taken in a procession through Queens Midtown tunnel at night. It is something that is definitely worth watching.
Lincoln Center also conducts a number of special New York festivals & events. There is the Mostly Mozart Festival conducted and Lincoln Center out of Doors, both of which are held in august. There is also the Midsummer Night Swing that is held at the center in the month of june. Towards the end of the year two of the famous events of the city- the lighting of the tree in Rockefeller Center and Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade are held.
