New York City Transportation
by NYTP Staff

New York is very well connected and offers excellent transportation facilities. Public transport is available at all times of day and night and it is very easy to travel from one place to another. The streets of the city run east and west. The avenues run north and south and this makes it pretty easy to find your way when you are in the city. For shorter distances you can take the side walk.

The most convenient way to travel around the city is to take the subway. Buses are also a great way to get around the city. Outside the peak hours the buses make for a good and cheap way to take in the sights of the city. Buses are also good if you have to travel cross town (from east to west or the other way). If you are not too pressed of time you can take the bus than the subway as you can see the city as you travel.

Another way you can enjoy sightseeing in the city is by taking the ferry. The most well known ferry is the Staten Island Ferry that runs from Battery Park to Staten Island. The ferry ride offers a great view of the New York harbor, the Statue of Liberty and other prominent landmarks. Taxi is another medium of transport in the city. There are the yellow cabs and the livery or black car that you can take. Walking is also a great way to do sightseeing while in the city.

There is the metro card that is issued by the New York City Transit Authority that can be used in the subway and the bus. These cards can be bought online or from the many stations or shops. Be on the lookout for the metro card sign outside shops to purchase those. During rush hours in weekdays from 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM and 5 PM to 7 PM it is best to stay away from the jammed mid town region. The travel time can almost double during such peak time.
