Upper West Side
by NYTP Staff

Primarily a residential and shopping area, the Upper West Side is a neighborhood that lies between the Central Park and the Hudson River. Unlike the Upper East Side that homes the more influential crowd, the Upper West Side has liberal and artistic people thriving here. Today it is a significant Jewish neighborhood with both German Jews as well as other Jews who came in as refugees. Earlier named as the Bloomingdale District, it has several long-established charitable institutions. They have paved way for the Columbia University and the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine.

The name ‘Bloomingdale’ has stuck on to the Upper West Side. It is much more diverse than what people think. It gives the visitors a glance of how the Manhattan actually lives. It is a great respite to those who want to be away from the bustling Midtown and other heavily crowded tourist areas. Even the hotels here give you a much better deal than those in the adjoining places. You can easily explore the Central Park and the American Museum of Natural History. There are many subways and buses here that can help you to explore other areas of the city easily and quite cheaply. In short, it is a great neighborhood for residents as well as the tourists!
