Times Square
by NYTP Staff

Times Square makes up the western part of the commercial area of Midtown Manhattan. Earlier named as Longacre Square, it was renamed after the Times Building which once housed the offices of the New York Times. Today considered as an iconic world landmark, it is where most of the world looks forward to celebrating their New Year’s Eve. On this day each year, millions gather to witness the Waterford Crystal Ball being lowered on a pole atop the building. The lights and advertising that flash from the southern end of the Times Square make every night really come alive.

Though the New York Times moved from the Times Square, it is still the most coveted place for most tourists across the world, especially on the New Year’s Eve. Keeping in with the growth of New York, Times Square has grown to be a cultural hub of theatres, music hall and prestigious hotels. It is today the place where people gather to celebrate most of their happy occasions. This is perhaps the only neighborhood that requires its residents to display neon lights. It is today a busy intersection of commerce as well as art which calls for viewer’s attention with most famous sign boards including those of Coca-Cola, Toshiba, Panasonic, McDonald’s and the like.
