Lower East Side
by NYTP Staff

Chosen as one of America’s most endangered places, the Lower East Side is one of the oldest neighborhoods today that was once an immigration point for the working class. This poor and diverse part of New York was once known as Little Germany for the size of its German population. However, in recent times it gained popularity as being a point of Jewish culture with the Jewish people around the world citing it as a place of beginnings of the Jewish American culture. You can still catch reminders of their heritage and culture in their shops located on the Hester Street, Essex Street or on the Grand Street near Pike.

Today you can see a new mix of Latin American and Chinese culture in these areas. After the recent gentrification, the night life has become livelier due to more sense of security. The night is totally bloom with loud sounds and happening music. Apart from funky shops, restaurants and bars, the Lower East Side is also famous for its innovative designers, writers and other artists who consider this to be their cultural mecca. The Lower East Side attracts the natives and tourists alike with its unique and characteristic history, culture, shopping and great night life!
