WE loved our stay at this hotel. Nice size rooms, courteous and friendly staff, a nice place to eat adjecent to it, within walking distance to every major point of interest, we love to walk so it was perfect.

I have never stayed in a 5-star hotel in NYC - too pricey. But of those that I've stayed in, Inter-continental, Hyatt, Crowne Plaza, Doubletree Suites, Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Park Central, Washington-Jefferson, Casablanca, Marriott Marquis - this New York Helmsley was every bit as nice as any of those. I would not hesitate to stay here again, although I would ask for room on a higher floor. We stayed on the eighth floor in a large corner room that overlook the alley on the east side of the property. That was the only drawback, because the garbage trucks would come every morning about 4:30am. Our stay went without a hitch. Staff was very friendly and helpful, restaurant good, location was exceptionally good near Grand Central Station and the hotel's amenaties, were quite acceptable. No, there aren't marble tubs and it's an old-style shower curtain, but big deal.

This is our first visit to New York, amazing city. Our experience was enhanced by the Helmsley hotel which was well worth it, in terms of service provided and the value for money. It`s location is excellent, a walking distance to the 5th avenue, time square, broadway and central park. There is a good bus service as well as underground links which takes you north and south of the city. The staff were very helpful and friendly and they walk that extra mile to help you as much as they can. I would highly recommand this hotel and will definitely stay there again. We paid around $400 / night including all taxes.

The New York Helmsley may have been a nice hotel at one time, but that time is long gone. This is a worn and tired hotel, with old rooms, old carpet, old painting, and old bedding. While the newish flat screen TV in the rooms may convince some that this is a modern hotel, it serves the same function as lipstick on a pig.

The hotel staff was, quite frankly, rude. My wife and I checked in, unfortunately, at the same time a large group was checking out. Instead of attempting to help the group, or individual travelers such as my wife and I, many members of the hotel staff decided to hide in their glass enclosed offices. When I confronted one, asking for help, he responded, "I'm busy." Then went to play with something on his computer screen. Check-in took more than 20 minutes.

Several times during our stay, the keycard reader for our room became inoperable, requiring a trek down to the main lobby (40 floors down), to have a new key issued. This is unacceptable in a major hotel.

Bottom line: I would NOT recommend this hotel to anyone. It needs to be renovated, and the staff needs to be overhauled.

The New York Helmsley is in an excellent location and the room was very comfortable and clean. It's not a band new hotel but many of the rooms have been recently remodeled and it was well worth the price I paid. The hotel staff was very friendly and greatly assisted us in our stay!

The hotel staff was very nice, especially the bartenders. We asked for extra towels and recevied them right away. The rooms were pretty clean but very dimly lit. The bathroom was only ok.

I stayed at the NY Helmsley Aug. 8th - 13th and it was absolutely wonderful. I purchased my stay mostly based on the reasonable price, cleanliness, and location. After reading the reviews on tripadvisor about the service, I was pleased with booking the hotel however, once I arrived, the service from everyone at the hotel was a bonus. The rooms were great (regardless of what other reviews might have said about the decor). Yes, it is not ultra-chic but there is nothing wrong about it. I had a couple of nieces staying at one of the latest modern hotels (which I won't mention by name) and they paid just as much as I did and our room was triple in size. I would HIGHLY recommend this hotel without hesitation.
