The location and rates are great. 2 blocks from the 96th street subway. Great neighborhood and actually very quiet. I'd never stayed in a Hostel/Hotel before and the experience was very nice. I really enjoyed meeting all kinds of people from ALL over the world--very cool!! Now the not-so-good news. . .I stayed in a single room. The beds are very uncomfortable. They are just make-shift platforms with a mattress on top. Basically the purpose of the mattress is to get you off the floor. The room is very small(which I expected) and there are no end tables or lamps for pleasant lighting. The bathroom was recently remodeled and was very nice and clean. The room was clean too, but there was a can of bug spray in the room. Honestly, I didn't see any bugs, but. . . ? When I go on vacation I just need a place to put my head and this was just that, too bad the bed was so bad. I am a single woman and I didn't feel threatened/nervous/scared at all!

What you see is what you get. Typical Hostel, although the front desk staff are very nice and helpful. Unfortunately a couple of nights I didn't have a pillow as housekeeping took it, but the front desk gave me an extra blanket to use. Bathrooms a little gross, but that's what you get at a hostel. It's safe and cheap!

The hostel was in good condition considering how old the building is. We had a single room with a double bed. The room was very tiny, but we weren't in the hotel enough to care. I was satisfied with the cleanliness of the bathrooms. It would have been nice to have another bathroom or two on the floor to share as I had to wait for the bathroom a couple of times. The bed was pretty hard, but the room was a comfortable temperature and the sheets were clean. My only complaint is that I could hear everything that went on out in the hallway. The doors were very thin and had a tendency to slam shut. If you can sleep with ear plugs in, that should do the trick!

When I checked into this place, I knew it was a hostel and not to expect a 5 star hotel. However, I did expect it to be clean and bug free...which it wasn't. I developed a rash while staying there and went to the doctor the day after I arrived home. It turns out that that my rash was a case of scabies. I should've known something was wrong when I smelled all the insecticide that is all over. I don't mind staying at hostels because they are a great deal and I always figure you just need a safe place to sleep and shower, but whatever you do, don't stay here. Also, it was very cold and the heater didn't do much good and the blanket provided was too thin.

I wasn't aware of the dormitory room where 4 people to a room. Not pleasant for me. Unfortunately single rooms were unavailable. I guess for the money it was ok. Next time i'll experience the single room stay.

Went there with a Group of 7 people in twin bedrooms. What you have to now is, that candy hostel has 3 builduings.. our room were in the 316 95th St. The smell in the room was disgusting. The whole hostel was very dirty and the bathrooms as well. In some hotels you find a small choclat bar on your pillow in the Candy hostel you find a roach.. (see the picture attached!) I have been in many youth hostels (especially around Europe) but I have never seen a place like that... Spend some more money and go to a cheap hotel!!

As this was my first stay at a hostel, I was pleasantly surprised. I've heard some real horror stories about hostels, but Candy was very clean and an excellent bargain. I strongly recommend it to anyone on a budget who wants to visit the city.
