United Nations
by NYTP Staff

Ever since the United Nations was established to maintain world peace in 1945 it has had its headquarters in New York. Although the United Nations headquarters is in New York, the land it occupies is considered to be international territory. The United Nations headquarters building was completed only in 1950 and looks absolutely great when seen from the east river. The 17 acres of land on which the United Nations headquarters was built in New York was bought by John. D. Rockefeller who later donated it. The cost of these 17 acres of land back then was 8.5 million dollars.

The United Nations headquarters was designed by the firm of Wallace Harrison who was the personal architectural adviser of the Rockefeller family. The world famous sculpture of a revolver’s knotted barrel stands outside the United Nations’ headquarters as a sign of world peace. Visiting the United Nations headquarters is something every tourist going to New York must do. The visitors’ entrance to the United Nations headquarters is located on First Avenue. A place where world leaders gather to discuss international politics and international peace is the United Nations headquarters in New York, and shouldn’t be missed out while strolling the streets of New York.
