Snug Harbor Cultural Center
by NYTP Staff

Located on the north shore of Staten Island in New York, the Snug Harbor Cultural Center is a collection of twenty six 19th century buildings set in a park and of great architectural importance. It is also referred to as the Sailor’s Snug Harbor because at one time it used to be a home for aged sailors. This National Historic Landmark District brings you architectural marvels that include the Greek revival, Beaux Arts, Italianate and Victorian style buildings. Originally designed as a retirement home and hospital for seamen, today it has been officially opened up to the public.

The beauty of the extensive landscaped grounds surrounded by the 19th century cast iron fence is breath taking. The 131 year old chapel and the interlocking Greek revival buildings that remind us of Greek temple-style buildings make us feel in embrace with the picturesque beauty of the old ages. This lush parkland was bought by the City in 1973 to meet the cultural needs of the community. Today they are home to a number of important institutions like the Staten Island Botanical Garden, Staten Island Children’s Museum and the John A. Noble collection. It is truly a surviving example of unequaled scale, extent and quality in urban planning.
