Flat Iron Building
by NYTP Staff

Flat Iron Building is situated in Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. The building was completed in1902. At that time it was known as the Fuller Building. At the time of completion it was one of the tallest buildings of New York City. It was one of the first buildings in New York built on a steel skeleton. That is how the local people came to call it the Flat Iron Building. This building was designed by Daniel Burnham.

From the broad side of the building it looked like flat tall piece of construction. From the narrow sides it gives impression of a slender building. The height, about 285 feet was made possible because of the steel work.

In the beginning, after the structure was built there were many misgivings among the local people about the effects of the new building on people of the town. Many of them thought that this building could influence the flow of wind in the streets near it. They thought it caused the blowing up of the skirts of the girls who walked in these streets. Many young men used to gather in these streets to see the bare legs of the girls. Police had a tough time dealing with them.
