Brooklyn Bridge
by NYTP Staff

It is absolute must to salute this great architecture of human kind – the oldest suspension bridge in the United States. The Brooklyn Bridge took thirteen years for an unbelievable dream to come true. It is today an icon of New York’s skyline and rightly deserves to be a National Historic Landmark. Where horse-drawn trollies used to be its regular traffic, today it has six lanes for motor vehicles and a separate walk way in the middle for pedestrians as well as bicycles. Commercial vehicles and buses are prohibited from using this bridge.

The Brooklyn Bridge is much more than just a marvel of technology – it was the symbol of optimism at that time. This bridge laid across the East River has helped to close the gaps between the city of Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan. This bridge was in fact a solution to move crowds from the already packed Manhattan by spurring development in Brooklyn. The towers of Brooklyn have now sunk slowly into the New York City itself and today the marvelous sight of chain of lights and flashes drawn across the bridge create a new novelty for the great city. Today, more than 125 years later, this bridge still functions as a vital route for the daily New York commuters.
