by NYTP Staff

Brooklyn Botanic Garden is located about 25 minutes away from midtown, Manhattan. It houses 10,000 species of plants and attracts about 700,000 visitors every year. It was started in 1910.

One great attraction of the garden is the Japanese Hill and Pond Garden. In 1915 the work on the garden was completed and opened for the public. It was designed and built by the Japanese landscape designer, Takeo Sheota. It has artificially made hills, a pond and an island.  The main benefactor was Alfred T. White who was later made its trustee. It is a very beautiful piece of artistic work. It is to be seen to be believed. This part of the garden has plenty of cherry trees of deferent types. They were the gift of the Japanese Government.

Another part of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden is the Crawford Rose Garden. It was built in 1927 on a donation made by one Construction Engineer, Walter V. Crawford. It has some 1,400 types of roses and about 5,000 rose bushes. Some of the rose bushes which were planted at the garden’s beginning are still there.

Some others inside the Brooklyn Garden which are worth mentioning are the Shakespeare Garden, Alice Recknagel Ireys Fragrance Garden and the Children’s Garden.
